I place a high priority on keeping the author's original voice and maintaining their structure, ideas, and language as much as possible. Whether a work is informational, inspirational, or somewhere in between, I believe it's important for the language to be tight, clear, appropriate, and accurate. No matter how many changes are made, authors should always be able to recognize their work as their own and approve of any changes made. Gary Kamia has a wonderful article in Salon magazine that describes the work good editors do and helps sum up my editing style.
